There are very few venues in the Bay Area where you can dance under twinkle lights strung through century-old oak trees until midnight, with the scent of heirloom citrus in the air and vineyards rolling out in every direction. Pacheco Ranch Winery in Novato is one of them.

Established as a land grant in 1840, this family-owned property is the oldest agricultural estate in California still operated by the same family. The 1876 Italianate ranch house, with its columned porch, wisteria-draped pergola, and fragrant rose garden, serves as the centerpiece for some of the most beautiful weddings Goodtime DJs has ever had the honor of performing at.

If you’re planning your celebration here, this guide covers everything your DJ needs to know about making Pacheco Ranch Winery sound as good as it looks.

Why Pacheco Ranch Winery Is Different from Every Other Venue

Most wedding venues give you a room and a time slot. Pacheco Ranch gives you the entire property for the whole weekend. Your wedding is the only event happening, which means total exclusivity, total freedom, and, importantly for your DJ, total control over the sound environment.

The venue is entirely outdoor, available May through October, and can accommodate up to 200 guests across five distinctly beautiful event sites. This outdoor-only setup creates both incredible opportunities and specific challenges for sound and entertainment that Goodtime DJs has learned to navigate through experience.

Sound Setup Across Five Ceremony and Reception Areas

Pacheco Ranch offers five distinct outdoor spaces, and couples typically use two or three across their wedding day. Each space has different acoustics, different natural sound barriers, and different power access points.

Ceremony Site Options. Two primary ceremony areas offer different aesthetics. The first, near the entrance, features two large olive trees that frame the couple as they exchange vows. The second offers an expansive lawn with an old-growth redwood tree as a natural focal point. At Goodtime DJs, we use battery-powered speakers for both ceremony sites to eliminate cable runs across grass and pathways. We position speakers at the front of the guest seating, angled back toward the audience, so the officiant and vow readers project clearly to every row. A higher elevated option further in the hills overlooks the vineyards and provides a dramatic panoramic backdrop, but requires more powerful speakers to compete with wind at elevation.

Reception Area. The centrally located reception space is the heart of the celebration. What makes this space magical is the canopy of mature oak trees strung with thousands of sparkling twinkle lights and spotlights. As night falls, this area transforms into something truly cinematic. For DJ setup, we position our main system at the edge of the reception space where power access is available, using the natural tree canopy as a sound buffer that keeps music contained within the celebration area rather than dissipating across open fields. The twinkle lights in the trees also eliminate the need for extensive venue lighting, though we supplement with uplighting and gobo projection to add color to the dance area.

The Midnight Advantage

Here’s something most Bay Area couples don’t know: Pacheco Ranch Winery is one of the only venues in the region where you can keep the dance floor going until midnight. Most venues enforce a 10 PM or 11 PM sound cutoff. This extra time changes the entire energy arc of the reception.

At Goodtime DJs, when we know we have until midnight, we structure the evening differently. We slow-build through dinner and early dancing, hold back our highest-energy tracks for the 10 PM to midnight window, and create a finale that couples and guests remember forever. This extended timeline is a genuine luxury, and it’s one of the reasons we love performing at Pacheco Ranch Winery.

Outdoor Sound Challenges and How We Handle Them

Outdoor-only venues present challenges that indoor venues never face, and Pacheco Ranch is no exception.

Wind. Marin County evenings can bring breezes off the coast that interfere with microphone clarity. We use windscreens on all ceremony microphones and carry backup wireless systems in case of interference from the winery’s metal structures.

Temperature drops. May and October evenings in Novato can cool down significantly after sunset. Cold affects speaker performance subtly, since bass response decreases slightly, so we compensate by adjusting our EQ settings as the evening progresses.

Ground surface. The reception area sits on natural ground, grass and packed earth, rather than a hard floor. This absorbs bass frequencies more than a hardwood floor would. We boost low-end frequencies slightly and position subwoofers on raised platforms to maintain that full, rich dance-floor sound.

Generator power. Depending on the event size and setup location, some areas of the property may require generator power rather than mains electricity. Goodtime DJs carries quiet-running generator connections to ensure our sound system has clean, consistent power regardless of location on the property.

BYOB Catering and DJ Coordination

Pacheco Ranch allows outside caterers, and there’s a two-case minimum wine purchase from the winery itself. This flexibility is great for couples but requires extra coordination from the DJ. Without a single venue coordinator managing the entire timeline, Goodtime DJs steps into a stronger MC and coordination role: cueing the caterer for dinner service, managing toast timing, and ensuring the bar service transitions smoothly from cocktails to dinner to dancing.

This is where 33 years of professional wedding DJ experience makes a tangible difference. We’ve worked with dozens of different caterers across Marin and Sonoma counties and know how to coordinate seamlessly with any vendor team.

Karaoke at Pacheco Ranch

One of the most popular add-ons we offer at Pacheco Ranch celebrations is karaoke. The relaxed wine-country atmosphere, combined with the extended midnight timeline, creates the perfect environment for guests to grab the mic and perform. We typically set up karaoke during the later portion of the evening, after formal dances and dinner, when the atmosphere has loosened up and guests are feeling the wine country spirit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Goodtime DJs bring its own power supply for outdoor areas at Pacheco Ranch?
Yes. We carry battery-powered ceremony speakers and clean generator connections for reception setups in areas without direct mains power access.

Can Goodtime DJs handle both DJ and MC duties at Pacheco Ranch Winery?
Absolutely. Because this venue allows outside caterers and doesn’t always have a dedicated venue coordinator, we take on a more active MC role, managing the timeline, coordinating with vendors, and keeping the evening flowing.

Is uplighting effective at an outdoor venue like Pacheco Ranch?
Yes, especially after sunset. We use LED uplights around the reception perimeter that complement the venue’s existing twinkle lights. The combination of tree lights overhead and colored uplights at ground level creates a spectacular atmosphere under the oaks.
